Uk to Croatia by Motorhome

With a total of 2,460 miles driven and eight countries visited in our motorhome, this was truly an amazing adventure.

You can find a summary of our trip including links to all of the campsites we stayed in, the dates, costs and our reviews if you scroll below.

You can view each of the places we stayed at and the surrounding areas in our series of videos covering the whole of this trip on our YouTube Channel.

Preparing for a motorhome trip to Croatia

We decided to book the campsites in advance to ensure availabilty and to avoid looking for vacancies on route.

We researched each of the sites re power supply, fresh water on pitch, grey water solutions, gas options and local shopping so we could make the most of each site.

We changed our bank to ensure that any transactions abroad didn't cost us anything extra. Lots of places took local currency only so we were able to cater for that.

Driving requirements for each of the countries we visited varied slightly. We carried spare bulbs, triangles, fluorescent jackets, driving documents, GHICs and of course our passports.

We planned to use a number of toll roads and motorways (some close to cities) so we ensured we knew how to and had the means to pay for each of the toll roads and had the right documentation (CritAir in France) for low emission zone areas.

There were a few items we took that proved useful throughout the trip. They included a battery and a mains fan, euros supply for laundry, portable clothes line to avoid costly driers, spare wheel and spare water pump for peace of mind!

Planning our activities in advance was useful and we booked where necessary. (Venice sightseeing and Plitvice National Park, Croatia, especially).

We took breaks on route and interspersed our short stays at campsites with longer stops.

Finally, here's a few more tips that made our trip easier. We decided to do no more than 200 miles per day, we planned to shop prior to our arrival at each site so we could buy goods more cheaply and have more choice. We took a load of non-perishables with us, like rice, pasta, cereals and biscuits.

The Benefits of Having Air Assist Fitted to Your Motorhome

An air assist system is a valuable addition to your motorhome's suspension that offers comfort, stability and control.

We had air assist fitted to the rear suspension of our motorhome and it certainly made a big difference to our travel experience. Take a look at the film on our YouTube Channel of the complete process and cost of having air assist fitted to our motorhom e.

Understanding Air Assist

Before delving into the advantages of having air assist fitted to your motorhome, let's take a closer look at what air assist actually is. Air assist, also known as an air suspension system, is designed to augment your motorhome's existing suspension by incorporating air springs or airbags.

Unlike traditional steel springs, air springs use compressed air to support the weight of your motorhome. This allows for dynamic adjustments in air pressure, which in turn affects the ride height and stiffness of the suspension. The air pressure can be controlled electronically, allowing you to fine-tune your motorhome's suspension settings based on driving conditions, load, and terrain.

Now, let's explore the numerous benefits that come with fitting air assist to your motorhome:

1. Improved Stability and Handling

Air assist systems are designed to level your motorhome by adjusting air pressure in the suspension. This ensures an even distribution of weight, reducing the risk of swaying and providing better stability on the road. Whether you're driving on highways or winding country roads, air assist can help you maintain control of your vehicle, especially in challenging driving conditions.

2. Enhanced Comfort

The air assist system helps absorb shocks and vibrations, leading to a smoother and more comfortable ride for you and your passengers. Bumpy roads and uneven terrains can become less taxing on your motorhome's occupants, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the journey without constant jostling.

3. Adjustable Ride Height

One of the standout features of air assist is the ability to adjust your motorhome's ride height. This feature comes in handy when navigating different terrains, setting up camp, or accessing tight spaces. With the push of a button, you can raise or lower your motorhome as needed, making it easier to level your vehicle on uneven ground.

4. Enhanced Towing Capability

If you're planning to tow a trailer, boat, or car behind your motorhome, air assist can significantly improve your towing experience. The system helps maintain proper alignment between your motorhome and the towed vehicle, reducing strain on your suspension and brakes. This results in safer and more controlled towing, even when dealing with heavy loads.

5. Increased Lifespan of Suspension Components

Air assist systems can extend the lifespan of your motorhome's suspension components by reducing wear and tear. By distributing weight more evenly, the system reduces the strain on your suspension, springs, and other crucial parts. This can lead to fewer maintenance issues and longer intervals between servicing.

6. Enhanced Resale Value

Equipping your motorhome with air assist can enhance its resale value. Buyers are often willing to pay more for a well-equipped motorhome that offers improved comfort, handling, and towing capabilities. By investing in air assist, you're not only enhancing your travel experiences but also making a wise financial decision for the future.

Conclusion

Adding air assist to your motorhome can transform your travel adventures by providing enhanced stability, comfort, and towing capabilities. The adjustable ride height and extended lifespan of suspension components further contribute to the overall value of this technology. Consider fitting your motorhome with air assist to enjoy a smoother, more controlled, and enjoyable journey on the road.
